The first month of no-buy year

One of the challenges that I take on this year, and I think is highly possible to do this year is the no-buy challenge.
No-buy challenge basically means you can only spend money on things that you essentially need, and not just spending mindlessly. This can be done for a period of time, like a day, a week, a month, or a year. The rules are different for each individual who take on this challenge because it really depends on the purpose and situation for each person.
Someone maybe wants to do a no-buy challenge to save money, another one maybe wants to do it to fix their mindset about money, or fix their spending habit, maybe others want to do it to save the environment, and many other purposes. This will then affect what kind of buying you allow yourself to do.
Rules might also be different for someone who lives alone, and for another one who lives with the family, or any other situation that will affect their finances.
For me, the goal of my no-buy year is to save money and to fix my relationship with money. Many times I've noticed I bought items just to relieve the stress I have, so I release that through the experience of buying, of owning something. Although for every purchase I do, I always give some time to consider the purchase, put it in my cart, and leave it for days before I really buy them. But often, when I got emotional, I will just buy things on my cart even though the day before I think I don't really need them. I also got easily tempted with stationery...and small little things when I already have tons of them. It almost feels like, my mind is occupied with money (because when I consider the item to buy, I will think about money, after I buy something and maybe regret it, I think about money, etc). So I kinda want to free my mind from thinking about it at all by just not buying, simply put.
Well, basically I just want to be more mindful about my emotion and the relationship with money, and at the same time to not spending so much time thinking about my spending and money, wow why is that sound so contradictory 😂....anyway...you get it..lol. It's like I want to fix my bad habit and ease my brain from thinking too much about it.
So yeah, I determined to take on this no-buy challenge.
Before this, I already did the no-buy challenge and low-buy challenge, but for a shorter period, or only at one type of spending. I often challenged myself to not spend any money besides the transportation for a week or two weeks, or a month. Or I told myself not to buy any ready-to-eat food or snack at all. But this time I'm taking it on a longer time and a larger scale.
This year, I only allow myself to buy or spend money on these categories:
- Toiletries: toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo, soap, facial wash. and only buy when I used up everything I stocked
- Skincare: Moisturizer only. and only buy when I used up everything I stocked.
- App and website subscription: Youtube premium only, website domain, and maybe other apps if I really really need them.
- Experience and entertainment: Only once a month, and I can't buy more stuff for my craft hobby or any future craft hobby this year.
- Food ingredients: And this year I challenge myself to just buy the bare minimum, more shopping in the kitchen.
- Business-related expenses: As I'm maintaining my shop and do other stuff as well, I allow the spending on this for the fee or any related spending. Just be mindful about it.
- Utilities: This can't be avoided.
- Donation
And this January, I think I did a very well job on this as I only spend on two things (other than the unavoided utilities). One is from the experience and entertainment category, I spent money on the online party The Arcane Salon, which was incredible and well-spent money. Another one is for app/website subscription. I use and cook the food ingredients that are available in the kitchen, and I think maybe for a few weeks more before I really need to buy something. ⇨ sounds like I'm a real food hoarder. lol.
I guess last year and this year is just the perfect year to do this no-buy or low-buy challenge. I saw so many people posting their no-buy experience on Youtube, and it was interesting to see how is it going for other people. We're all in this together. yay.
